The Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a four-year deal with linebacker Mychal Kendricks, one that should conceivably keep him in Philly through the 2019 season. The deal, which was first reported by NFL Media’s Albert Breer, includes $29 million, $16 million of which is guaranteed.
Kendricks, a 2012 second-round draft pick of Andy Reid’s, has endured an offseason full of trade speculation, but he possesses a rare skill set and it’s clear Kelly believes he can be an integral part of the defense. Kendricks is still just 25 years old and may share snaps with DeMeco Ryans and Kiko Alonso in ’15, but Kendricks’ overall athleticism suggests he will beat out Ryans for the bulk of playing time.
After all, linebackers that run a 4.47 40 as Kendricks can are special players, and Kendricks has seen substantial improvement in his play each of the last three seasons.
Last year, Pro Football Focus rated Kendricks as the sixth-best inside linebacker in the NFL, grading him with very positive marks in both pass coverage and his pass-rushing abilities. Kendricks has dealt with nagging injuries during his three-year NFL career, so perhaps Kelly’s decision to draft Texas inside ‘backer Jordan Hicks in the third round was to provide depth at the position.
Still, when Kendricks is on the field, he’s a unique breed who is capable of playing in both a 3-4 and 4-3. He’s a key component of an underrated Eagles’ front seven, and extending him long-term was crucial for Kelly.
